Equipment! Use the durable tires. Lots of leaf cover over rocks right now and you are guaranteed to bash into some... Single speeders. Use the easy gear. 32/20 on a 29er. 18 or 19 if you are really strong. The climbs have some sections where walking loses tons of time. Give your bike a solid once over. If you suck at this go to a shop:) This sounds obvious but I saw enough easily avoidable issues last year it is worth mentioning.
