Eric B. and Rakim never had a major radio hit like their Golden Age contemporaries Run D.M.C. or Public Enemy, but anyone familiar with hip-hop history will tell you they were respected as two of the finest and most influential artists in their crafts. Eric B. was the DJ responsible for popularizing James Brown funk samples in hip-hop. Rakims smooth flow was a revelation—rather than constrain himself to the meter like most of his peers, he pioneered internal rhyme schemes and complex wordplay to an unprecedented degree. He raised the bar for every MC that came later. Speaking of Public Enemy, check out Flavor Flav dancing cameo in this video. New York was the birthplace of rap, but by the mid-80s it had spread all over the country. These guys made sure that East Coast rap would continue to be a creative epicenter up to the present day. Tomorrow, a little bit of 90s pop punk. Sorry for the lateness of this post; sometimes life gets in the way.
