Español I 2014-2015 Course Description This is a course in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the Spanish language, with emphasis on reading, speaking, and listening using all present and regular preterite tense verb forms. The student is also introduced to the cultural and historical aspects of the Hispanic civilization. Meet your instructor As you probably already know, my name is Raúl Zanatta. I was born in Argentina and graduated from River Plate Adventist University (UAP) with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. I worked as a high school teacher and a College professor at UAP for eleven years before going as a missionary to the jungles of Paraguay in 1996 where I served at Colegio Adventista del Este Paraguayo. In 1997 I moved to Southern California to work as a teacher at Newbury Park Adventist Academy. And since 2004 I have the privilege of teaching at Hawaiian Mission Academy. To make this school year more successful we will have to follow some guidelines. Here are some of them to help you achieve the best in this class. Please, take a close look at them: Attendance It is very important that you attend ALL classes. When you learn a new language the knowledge you are acquiring is accumulative. That means: what you learned today you will have to remember tomorrow and always. If you miss a class it is YOUR responsibility to find out what was taught that day, get the notes from a classmate and come prepared for the next class. You can also call me until 9:00 pm at 754-4887, or send me an e-mail at: raulzan@hotmail. Quizzes You will have a quiz almost every class. Quizzes are a very important part of your grade. It is proven that if you get very good grades on your quizzes it will help you get good grades on your tests too. Vocabulary quizzes are the most important. Tests At the end of each chapter you will have a test. The test will include Vocabulary, Grammar and Listening Comprehension. Honesty Honesty is essential in my class. Refer to the School Bulletin, please. Materials You MUST come to class prepared and that includes bringing all your materials: text-book, work-book, paper to take notes, pencil and pen. You need to have a 3-hole binder. I will deduct points for not being prepared. Taking notes is mandatory. Electronic devices such as laptop computers and tablets (iPad or similar) are not required. However, these tools are very valuable when it comes to taking notes and organizing them, or to do research on the Internet. Students who wish to bring these devices to the class are welcome to do so. It is expected that these tools will be used strictly for class work. If I see that they become a distraction or are used to chat, send messages or any other activity other than the current assignment they will be confiscated for the rest of the class, and the student WILL LOSE THE PRIVILEGE OF BRINGING IT AGAIN TO MY CLASS. This is the ONLY warning regarding the use of computers and/or tablets. Attitude “Respect” should be the motto in our class. Treat everybody with respect and you will be treated the same. Classroom Rules You will see them posted on the walls of the Spanish classroom. Not following them will bring consequences. The first time you break a rule you will be warned. The second time it happens, your parents will be notified. And the third time and thereafter you will be written up for insubordination/defiance, up to 15 points will be taken from your citizenship grade and a conference with the Principal will take place.
