Especially for my friend Kaushik Ghosh. As the Durga Puja ends - TopicsExpress

Especially for my friend Kaushik Ghosh. As the Durga Puja ends in Kokata here are two images from earlier visits. Almost before one Puja ends the scuptors at Khumatuli, a suburb of Kolkatta, start making the idols for the the next event. In one the sculptor is building up the bodies from a framework of bamboo, then straw and finally holy river mud from the Hoogly River. The faces are plastic. The other photo Maas Last Journey shows a tableau being taken into the river perched between two boats. Once in the deeper water the boats separate and the tableau (or stele I think its called?) falls between and floats away. I managed to get on this boat but couldnt find a seat so they chucked me off! The final day immersion is a frenzy as all the tableaux have to be immersed before a certain time. With limited places with access to the river it goes on for 24 hours. No sooner over and the people of Kolkata start preparing for the Kali Puja later this month.
