In Ethiopia, there are very large numbers of churches decorated with various mural paintings. Traditional paintings are also observed in many of the manuscripts. Most Ethiopian manuscripts are discovered with different designs and are sometimes illustrated with painting. With the expectation of very few ancient rock carvings, traditional paintings in Ethiopia have religious orientations. Most them are intended to convey spiritual massages of the Ethiopian Orthodox church. They have been major ways of acquainting the faithful with the history and teaching of the church. Those traditional paintings are generally characterized by Biblical themes and figures. Of all religious personalities, the painting of Virgin Mary with her infant son occupies a prominent place. Then, angels, evangelists, saints, martyrs, and other religious features have become subjects of it. Traditional paintings of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church have unique features.
