Ethnic Conflict in Xinjiang, China A Strategic Workshop on Insecurity This strategic workshop brings together UK experts on Xinjiang Studies to discuss worsening ethnic conflict in Xinjiang and China proper, and to consider how far the increased violence may be related to increased state securitisation. Here, state securitisation is conceived in a broad sense, including not just its obvious manifestations such as the increased military and police presence in Xinjiang but also the series of unpopular state policies imposed on the region since the mid-1990s: accelerated in-migration of the majority Han from China proper; the monolingual (Chinese-medium) education system; repression of innocuous religious acitivies; censorship of literary and cultural products. Experts will consider alternative routes that might be taken toward achieving a truly secure environment on China’s northwestern borders.
