European Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc wants a standardised driving tax across all EU member states. Vehicle owners would be charged for every mile driven under a high-tech scheme based on satellite-tracking systems. All the cash would go directly to Brussels before being shared out to national governments to spend on maintaining transport networks. But the proposal triggered fury from motoring organisations and anti-Brussels campaigners. Robert Oxley, of the pressure group Business for Britain, said: “Motorists and firms already pay enough to use the roads, without EU tolls adding to that burden. “It’s ludicrous that the EU would even consider hitting hard-pressed drivers with further charges. It appears some in the commission just don’t understand that decisions like these should be taken in the UK, not Brussels.”
