Even before its scheduled inauguration next year, the Pope Francis Center for the Poor in Palo, Leyte now houses dozens of evacuees with typhoon Ruby already making landfall in Samar. Chris Militante, Palo archdiocese’s information officer, said that as of Saturday morning around 100 people have already took shelter at the complex, mostly women and children from nearby villages. “The number is increasing,” Militante said as strong wind and rain continue to pound on the area. The Pope Francis Center, which is composed of an orphanage, home for aged and a clinic, is located inside the compound of the archbishop’s residence Militante said the building of the facility, which was completed this month after around five months of works, was financed by the Vatican to help survivors of super typhoon Yolanda. The center is scheduled to be blessed by the Pope himself when he visit Leyte on Jan. 17, 2015. “But as early as now the facility is already serving its purpose by sheltering our brothers and sisters from typhoon Ruby,” he said.
