Even though we may be predisposed toward developing certain diseases, if we don’t expose ourselves to things that trigger or “turn on” those genes, we’re likely to stay healthy and live longer. What are we talking about? Epigenetics. Essentially, epigenetics is the study of gene expression. Were talking about the way genes interact with the environment. It deals with the tendency of certain genes (many of which can be attributable to the development of disease) to be turned on or off, like light switches. Exposure to environmental risk factors resulting from the foods we eat, air we breathe, beverages we drink, and more, are the catalysts or triggers that can turn those switches on and may activate genes that can negatively affect our health. So, forget the “Nature versus Nurture” debate. It’s no longer about the role of genes versus the environment. Our health and longevity is determined by the way in which our genes react WITH the environment. Health starts at the cellular level. So, why not create a healthy environment for your cells? healthycell
