Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum is home to the Oregon Aviation Hall of Honor, which annually inducts exceptional Oregonians for their outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of aviation and air power. The 12th Annual Oregon Aviation Hall of Honor Induction Ceremony is this Sunday, October 19th. Inductee: Lt. Col. Robert Young - Coming to Forest Grove at the age of 12, Robert Young learned to fly in 1933 in Portland with Tex Rankin and went on to fly air shows and demonstrate Taylorcraft aircraft. In 1941, he attempted to join US Army Air Corps but was denied due to age, so he joined Royal Canadian Air Force. After release to US Army Air Force in 1942 he took multi-engine training and flew C-46s & C-47s. Sent to India, he flew 18 months on the “Hump” between India and China where he won the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster over the course of 142 sorties. After the war, he returned to Oregon and served 20 years in the USAF Reserve until retirement in 1972. He continued to fly for pleasure as a sport pilot in Oregon for another nine years. Young moved to Midway, OR in 1975 and became the Fire Chief and served in that capacity for 20 years. Young passed away in 2000.
