Every legislator in this country needs to read this story. Craig Deeds was severely injured, and his mentally ill son committed suicide, because of fundamental failures of law. In this case, even a state representative, complete with a judges order for commitment, could not get a hospital bed for his dangerously mentally ill son. There were not enough beds and state law required that, if they could not find a bed within 6 hours, they had to let him go. Imagine entering an emergency room after a traumatic car accident...and being sent home because there were not enough beds! The hospital, the county - someone would find a way to treat the injured patient and find a bed. Not so when the trauma is mental-health-related. The American mental health system is in tatters. This problem is fixable. Lives depend on it being fixed.
