Every now and then I have someone come up to me and give me advice on pastoring. It usually goes like this, “They’re lucky I ain’t pastoring cause if I was I’d tell it like it is. You need to straighten those people out, Pastor!” Every time I hear that sort of statement I thank God that that person ISN’T pastoring anywhere! Most of these SUPER SAINTS who tell me these things would be unwilling to let me point out their faults in public. Usually the thing that they so much want me to point out in others is something that they don’t struggle with themselves. But you start touching their besetting sin and watch how they squirm! The apostles James and John were hot-headed and impetuous. They believed that they understood everything about the Samaritans and they judged them as unworthy of God’s grace. When a Samaritan village refused to receive Jesus these two “advisors” asked Jesus for permission to destroy the whole village! And (Jesus) sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elijah did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy mens lives, but to save them. And they went to another village. Luke 9:52-56 If we really wanted everybody under a microscope we would find out many things that we would be better off not knowing! Don’t be so quick to dispense judgment on people; rather seek to show mercy and grace. I have found that I need mercy and grace and I have also found that I receive exactly what I sow!
