Every now and then, I think of a handful of artists I genuinely loved to work with in my radio days. One of those bands was Stretch Princess from the UK. The record rep for the label (Alan Galbraith - Wind Up Records) was the nicest guy, thick Irish accent and wildly full of passion for the group. He and I worked hard for this little band….and some others that DID see success, like Creed (no jokes, Jamey and Walter…LOL). I listen to them now and I admit it sounds typical pop-alternative and somewhat dated, but in 1998 THAT was the sound. I played the F*CK out of this song on Mix 94.7, but sadly, it never caught on. I still think they should have seen at least small commercial success. They didn’t shake up the recording industry with an awesome new sound, but they sounded good and I really liked them and wanted them to grow to later do those amazing/ground breaking things. Such is life...cant win them all. Other bands that I felt should have seen success (or more success than they got in the United States) was: Edna Swap - the band who WROTE the hit single Torn that Natalie Imbruglia took to the top of the charts Barenaked Ladies - One Week is only one side of this band, who were amazing when the original members were still together. Steve and Ed had synergy and were funny as shit. Patrice Pike - If Melissa Etheridge, Janice Joplin or the Wilson sisters of Heart had a spunky little sister, who sang better than they did....it would be Patrice. Wayne Sutton and her in Sister 7 had success stolen from them. SHE SHOULD BE A STAR! Del Amitri - Yes, Roll To Me was a hit and it sucks. No, really. They had so many other great songs. Paula Cole, Radney Foster, Joan Osborne, Abra Moore, The Mavericks.....I could go on. Some have been wildly famous for one thing or another (BNLs theme to Big Bang Theory) but theyre deeper and more diverse than what they have got credit for....but thats another FB post for another rainy day. Stretch Princess, where ever you are these days, I’m STILL pushing your record. LOL Jack Stevens Mix 94.7 - KAMX, Austin, TX (circa 1998)
