Every week I shall do a top 10 movies of the year starting with 2010 and ending with 2014. Let’s begin with 10. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World You probably won’t agree that this is better than some of the films I left out, but I enjoyed the heck out of this movie. Even after multiple viewings it still makes me laugh. I love all the characters especially the small roles played by Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza and Kieran Culkin. The story was interesting, the music was great and bottom line it is just fun to watch. 9. True Grit I can’t compare this to the original, but I’m glad they remade it because it was great. It has noteworthy performances by Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. I never really watch any Westerns but this was such a good movie I thought about going back to the 60s and watching a few. 8. The Social Network I have loved pretty much every David Fincher movie I have seen bar Alien3. With an excellent screenplay written by Aaron Sorkin and great casting, what could have been a boring film about the creation of Facebook became an interesting tale of betrayal and intellectual property. 7. The King’s Speech I went in expecting a boring English drama about royalty but was delighted when this movie came out funny, heart-warming and with an Oscar winning performance by Colin Firth. At first I thought that it would be only this good the first time, I have since bought it and it is still great. 6. Shutter Island When I watched this movie the first time it creeped me out so much I had my face buried in my hands during some scenes. Having grown up since 2010, when I watch this movie I enjoy it when it creeps me out. It offers an interesting plot with another Leonardo ambiguous end. The score is also worth mentioning as well as the excellent twist. 5. Black Swan This film also had me look away from the more gruesome scenes. Like The Wrestler, this film follows a person’s obsession with their career in this case leading to a spectacular break down of their mind. Also that one scene, you know what I mean. 4. Toy Story 3 Who didn’t love Toy Story 3? A kids movie that can make you cry and also instantly transports you to when you were a kid. ‘Nuff Said. 3. The Fighter This is one of my favourite sports movies. With an excellent cast including Amy Adams, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, the way this film explores the nature of family and sport is just excellent. 2. Kick- Ass Why, you ask, is this film so high? I loved this film so much I bought the special edition that came with a t-shirt that I still wear and the graphic novel which I enjoyed just as much the movie. The film is perfect combination of hilarious, intense action and it gave us one of my all-time favourite characters: Hit Girl. Honourable Mentions: 127 Hours, Animal Kingdom, Blue Valentine, Ip Man 2, Never Let Me Go, Tangled All of these could have been number ten but decisions had to be made. 1. Inception Obviously Christopher Nolan tops my list. I love this film on all its levels. The cast, the plot, the score, the way you can extract so much from it (is the film actually about film making?), the level of detail (Cobb’s totem appears and disappears according to if he is in a dream), just everything is excellent. Do you agree? Do you remember your favourite movies of 2010? https://youtube/watch?v=I4dEWOB6THE
