Everyone always says XGames is the best and biggest event of the year and I couldnt agree more. The amount of hype and publicity around the event encourages us athletes to throw down as hard as we can to show everyone what we are made of and why we are so invested in this sport we love. After competing on Wednesday night, I felt nothing but stoked. I knew I wouldnt be able to touch Maddies insanely technical run with both way 9s and right 7 to switch 7, but I was stoked with my own performance and ability to land my run with a new trick I had learned 3 days before (right cork 7). I was also really impressed on the rest of the girls runs, where both way flares, alleyoop flat 5s, multiple switch hits, and 1080s were being thrown. I think all together we did a really good job of showcasing our sport at the highest level its ever been displayed. Its sad to see that some people are not recognizing how far we have come and the progress we are continuing to make. As an athlete who has overcome so many injuries and still managed to get back to the podium with new tricks and higher amplitude, it hurts to hear someone say our sport isnt progressing because we get hurt too much, and it should just be cut because no one is impressed. I didnt get to ski with Sarah as long as I would have liked but the time I did get to spend with her left a huge impact on me and everyone else. She was a huge role model in the way that she skied with her heart on her sleeve every damn time and pushed everyone else by landing risky runs that were not medal guaranteed. I know for a fact that every girl competing at XGames carries that with them and is trying their best to live up to her legacy. The fact that people are openly criticizing our effort in the most negative way is heartbreaking and not helpful in the progression of womens freeskiing whatsoever.
