Evidence by Jon Webster Many Christians say that the reason we are all atheists is because we want it to be true and as a matter of fact, this can’t be farther from the actual truth. Let me explain. I would like to put forth and offer up to you three aspects of Christianity that are palatable and are reasons you might be tempted to believe it and finally one very good reason you absolutely shouldn’t. First of all, there’s the omnipotent being at your beckon call. The Bible tells us of a celestial, cosmic genie who grants wishes. In it, it says ask and ye shall receive, knock and the door will be opened. They tell you that this god can do anything; intervene in any way to come to you aid. He will calm your fears and anxieties; he is a protector. And he can help you in your time of need if you only ask; if you only call on his name. Why wouldn’t anyone want this to be true? Secondly, there is the fear and threat of hell. They warn you if you don’t believe, that you will be punished agonizingly in a life after this one. All we have to do to avoid this is believe. Why wouldn’t anyone want this fear relieved? The third aspect is the carrot and promising reward of heaven. They tell you that after this life, if you believe, you get to go to a paradise with no suffering to commune with passed loved ones, family, and friends. Why wouldn’t anyone want this to be so? The reason is a pure lack of evidence. This god, they claim has one defining characteristic: wanting everyone to know he exists so he can have a personal relationship with them. He wants you to believe this so bad, if you don’t believe, you will be punished in a life after this one by your skin burning off, only to regrow and this process happens forever for all of eternity. He wants you to believe this this bad. And as of yet, he has fallen far short of proving his existence to scientists, a profession that specializes in determining what things exist and what do not. Over 90% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences don’t believe in a personal god. In the group of people with the highest IQs, MENSA, here again, over 90% believe in any gods. The reason we don’t believe is because the evidence isn’t there. The reason we don’t believe is it doesn’t make any damn sense. Nothing more. Nothing less.
