Ex SOLENT BLIZZARD. Today was the final day of competition for the 10 remaining members of 47 Regt who were competing on the Royal Artillery Snowboarding Competition in Austria. The competitions have been running throughout the week and follow the same international guidelines that are used in the recent Olympic Games. The first event at the start of the week was slalom, the Regt Team did exceptionally well with most members passing through the prelims into the main knock out competition. 4 members got through to the final 16 but the overall level of competition was exceptional. The next event was the Boardercross, a three person race down a pre-prepared track with tight turns and jumps. Again the Team did well with 2 members getting through to the quarter finals. The final event was the slope style, an event where competitors have to demonstrate their ability jump and complete various tricks over obstacles. This event takes serious physical and mental strength to overcome the natural fear fear associated with doing large jumps. This is the Teams forte and out of the 140 competitors a majority of the senior riders in the 47 Regt Team scored highly and came within the top 15. Out of the 17 teams who entered we came 8th for the A Team and 9th for the B Team. It was disappointing to not have scored higher but 2 injuries earlier in the week dampened out overall opportunity. The injuries highlight the arduous and dangerous aspect of snowboarding, this is not a sport for the feint hearted. The Regt is keen to develop talent within the Regt, Bdr Zoe Shackcloth started snowboarding through the RA scheme and has been selected for the Army team, this is a significant achievement. She returned from Afghan the same day that she departed for Austria for the RA Champs. Further details for the 2015 event will be disseminated soon, we are looking for fit, keen, eager, fearless volunteers.
