Ex-judge is Opposition’s choice for Speaker PETALING JAYA: The position for the Dewan Rakyat Speaker will see a contest after Pakatan Rakyat announced that they would nominate a former Federal Court judge as a candidate. The Opposition pact named Datuk Abdul Kadir Sulaiman on their insistence that the Speaker ought to be someone impartial and independent. “Pakatan insists that the Dewan Speaker must be appointed from among those who are independent, neutral from political parties and qualified to serve,” said Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday. He added that Bandar Tun Razak MP Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who is also the Selangor Mentri Besar, would move for the motion when Parliament sits on June 24. Abdul Kadir retired as a judge in March 2006 and he was appointed as a member of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock’s death. He was also appointed into the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s Executive Transformation Committee and was a member of the Terengganu Regency Advisory Council. “Abdul Kadir fits all the criteria needed to be a Speaker,” said Anwar. “Pakatan is fully confident that selecting him will increase public respect for the institution of Parliament and its integrity internationally.” Barisan endorsed Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia to be Speaker for a second term. The House will vote through a secret ballot.
