Excellent conviction for The Hawks... The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Anwa Dramat, commended the Organised Crime Unit of the Hawks in Upington, the Northern Cape, today for securing 43 years direct imprisonment against 28-year-old Mpho Radebe. Today, the Upington Regional Court sentenced Radebe to 10 years’ imprisonment for housebreaking, 15 years’ imprisonment for the possession of explosives, 15 years’ imprisonment for the use of explosives and three years’ imprisonment for escaping from lawful police custody. In 2012, Radebe was arrested at his place of residence in Lenasia, Johannesburg, Gauteng. He was arrested after he had broken into Botha van der Walt’s farm situated 15 km outside Upington towards Olifantshoek. He stole a substantial amount of cash after he had blown the safe open with explosives. He later escaped from his police cell at the Upington Police Station and was rearrested in Polokwane, Limpopo, in 2013. Lieutenant General Dramat lauded the team for their hard work. The team positively linked Radebe to the crime scene and the court was convinced that Radebe was indeed the man responsible for the crime. We will continue in our quest to enforce the law, said Lieutenant General Dramat.
