Excellent response by Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer!! “Its a good thing for students and schools,” said Claire Fiddian-Green, the co-director of Gov. Mike Pence’s Center for Education and Career Innovation. It really bothers me that Claire Fiddian-Greene is the first person whose reaction to the waiver is quoted above. She is making 6 figures as the governors appointed chair of his shadow branch of public education..the CECI. That secondary department of ed, that added layer of bureaucracy has done nothing but undermine Ritzs team. They even went so far as to send a lengthy complaint to the USDOE (perhaps in hopes of jeopardizing and thwarting the waiver?) tearing her application apart. The millions of dollars of our taxpayer money that goes to this undermining of our ELECTED superintendent is a slap in the face to we who want Glenda Ritz to lead. I cant understand why you would legitimize the CECI and Fiddian-Greene by having them quoted first? Superintendent Ritz response to the waivers approval should have been primary. It was her staff and team who worked countless hours under a ticking clock. She had the enormous pressure of a governor, a state board of ed, a strange expensive undermining secondary department of education appointed by said governor, and a supermajority in the legislature.. all excited to have her fail. The CECI in particular worked actively to undermine her. But Ritz didnt fail, she has received the extension for the waiver. She was mandated by the state legislature to create new standards and withdraw from the Common Core. She included many professional voices and collaboration in that task to piece together what she had to, given state and federal requirements and a very short timeline. She tried to allow for local control and some flexibility in the evaluation piece because she knows that test scores are NOT a reflection of good teaching (do your research on VAM.. it is a statistical fact) and yet we have federal and state authorities making policy that flies in the face of that fact. She and her staff worked tirelessly trying to provide sound educational policy in the face of UN-sound, nonsensical law by folks in the statehouse and at the federal level who clearly know NOTHING about education. Glenda Ritz should have been the first one interviewed to respond to the waivers approval because she has been through the gauntlet to get it done. To give Claire Fiddian-Greene the first response in this article.. and Glenda Ritz secondary, an after-thought.. is disturbing and disrespectful. It is seen almost as a validation or legitimization of the governors wasteful, expensive, useless shadow department of education. It adds insult to the injury.
