The basic context of his message was far-right Republicans really have no place in political debate because they’re nuts and their presence only gets in the way of people who are actually trying to get something done. Whereas George Wallace was a racist who told Dr. King, someone who would eventually become a civil rights icon, to get out of his state essentially because King was fighting for equality in Alabama. Wallace’s remarks were made out of ignorance, hatred and racism. I can already hear it – “And he was a Democrat!” Yes, he was. When Democrats were often racists – which changed when Republicans implemented the “Southern Strategy” as Democrats became the party for desegregation and civil rights.
