Excerpt from Seer Society Book One (unedited) Lukus Perched atop the tallest building on the Garlandton Square, the three of us keep watch on our target: Clarity Miller, teenage mortal and newly marked Seer. “Is that her? Is it?” Markus bounces on the balls of his feet, panting like a dog … well, he is a dog. A lone figure stumbles out of the door. From my vantage point I can tell its not the Seer. This human has light hair, and is a bit shorter. Turning my head toward Stone, I watch as he sniffs the air, sucking in deep breaths. His black skin is tinged with an orange gleam, thanks to the large emergency light situated on top of the pebble-covered roof. “Not her,” informs Stone, grimacing. “But there is something wrong with this human, something not right.” The female mortal walks to a silver automobile, opens the door, then vomits. “Eww, what is she doing?” Markus wonders, sounding appalled, and if it were possible, he appeared to pale. “Hush, hound,” I snap, fighting the smile thats trying to penetrate my features. “The human is simply throwing up, which means its sick. And besides, youve seen and smelled worse, my friend.” “Humans are disgusting beings,” mutters Markus with a scrunched up face. These hounds may be dense, but they are certainly entertaining. “Right you are,” I agree. “Humans are vile, destructive beings that carry many diseases and afflictions.” The sick blonde female, whos stench is utterly atrocious, finally pulls out of the parking lot, disappearing down the empty street. Electricity surges around us, fueling us for whats coming next. “Now what?” Stone asks, scratching at his bald head. The hounds are still not used to their human skins, but after tonight the skins would not burden them anymore. “Lets move,” I promptly answer. As a unit we jump off the five-story building, swiftly landing on our feet. The town square is devoid of any human life. Only one spark remains, and its coming from the store on the outskirts of the square. Looking to the skies I observe with delight the dark clouds rolling in, obscuring the moon and stars from view. They roll over and over each other in heartbreaking turmoil … which is exactly what Im preparing to unleash. Briskly walking toward the building known as Bakers Supermarket, anger flares in my veins with both Hell Hounds throw arms across my chest, halting our steps altogether. “Just what do you think – ” “Silence,” hisses Markus, breaking off my words. “And be still,” warns Stone. “Very, very still.” Its at that point I watch as their eyes burn a bright red, with their noses lifted high. Theyre sniffing the air almost to the point of violence, combing through every floating particle that hovers in the atmosphere. Then, all at once, their reddened eyes look to me. “The Guardian,” they speak in unison, harboring identical frowns of pure revolt … and terror. Taking in their hunched over, frightened postures, I start to laugh. Wonderment becomes etched deeply in their human skins, their expressions lost and forlorn. “Why are you laughing?” Stone inquires thoughtfully. “This is quite serious,” counters Markus. “I am laughing because...” I pause, reigning in my cackles. “The angel cant touch us! And he definitely cant help her.” “What?” An incredulous look covers Markuss face. “I am confused,” Stone counters. I roll my eyes. “Youre always confused.” Stone follows up with a frown. I continue, “No, the Seer is marked, but she isnt saved. Shes been stating for years that God doesnt exist.” Again, Stone says, “Im still confused. “Dont you get it?” The hardness in my voice causes him to tremble. “Shes still in the dark about who she is and what she can do. Shes helpless and alone!” Markus grins. “You mean – ” “The Light cannot interfere, the angel is defenseless!” I finish for him, deliciously beguiled. My eyes fall on Bakers Supermarket, where Clarity Miller is located. With a snarl I say, “The Seer is ours.”
