Excursion to Kaunas Castle and Kaunas 9th Fort When: 2013 10 12 (Saturday) at 12:00 Where: Meet in Rotušė sq., beside the bicycle tree Sort discription: Kaunas Castle is the oldest masonry castle in Lithuania. It was buitl in the 14th century and the place was strategically good for watching the nearby cities and trade routs. Now it is in the old town of Kaunas. The masonry, that we can see today, is from the later centuries, but it was rebuilt following the plan of the second castle. There are some fragments, left from the old castles. The tower now houses the art gallery. Kaunas 9th Fort is a Stronghold in the northwest section of Kaunas, with capacity of defensive in strengthening. The construction of 9th Fort was completed of the eve of First World War. During First Soviet occupation years (1940-1941) 9th Fort became a prison of NKVD, from wich political prisoners were sent to Soviet camps.
