Exodus 20 is one of the more famous chapters in the Bible...the giving of the 10 Commandments. Its so important to read this chapter in its context (actually thats true for every chapter!). God has just powerfully freed his people from their 400+ year slavery. However, they arent completely sure about this God they are following. They dont have the knowledge of God that many of us have today. So, God gives them the 10 Commandments to both guide their actions and also teach them about who he is. The 10 Commandments reveal both Gods character and his expectations. So often we read these as a list of rules meant to restrict us. But it was never Gods intention to re-enslave the people all over again. These rules would guide them to use their newly provided freedom in a way that would benefit them and bring God honor.
