Expectations are high among Malawians that the presidential debate set for this evening in Lilongwe will be an improvement from last week’s show. Some Political analysts and the public faulted last week’s debate that it was more of a Question and Answer session than an actual debate. During the event, presidential candidates are expected to give solutions to various challenges facing the nation. Four of the twelve presidential candidates chickened out last week and they included President Joyce Banda of the Peoples Party, leader of the democratic progressive party Peter Mutharika, Davis Katsonga of Chipani cha Pfuko and Tisintha alliances’ George Mnensa. The leadership of the PP had earlier communicated that their candidate will not attend any of the debates which the Public described as a missed opportunity for the aspirant. In an earlier interview with Capital Fm her Presidential Press secretary Steve Nhlane, said President Joyce Banda will never attend such debates. “The reason why the president did not attend the presidential debate was already explained by the party’s secretary general Mr. Maulidi, last week and this is because the president had other commitments in Salima and she makes her programme a month in advance so she did not think that she needed to change and I believe this will apply to all the debates” said Nhlane. President of the opposition Democratic progressive party-DPP Peter Mutharika who missed out the first debate claiming the confirmation reached him late is expected to participate in tonight’s debate. The debates have been organized to give an opportunity to the presidential candidates to sell their manifesto and policy on various issues affecting the nation, and how they will deal with such issues if voted into power on May 20.
