Expectations that China’s box office revenue will surpass the U.S. in the coming years are triggering a wave of investment among private sector entrepreneurs in the film and entertainment industry. Among them, China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin, acquired U.S. movie theatre chain AMC Entertainment in 2011, and is spending $8 billion on a mini-Hollywood in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao. U.S. entertainment companies including Disney and DreamWorks have also been actively looking to expand in China. Disney and local partners are investing $5.4 billion in a Shanghai Disney Resort that includes a Shanghai Disneyland and is scheduled to open next year.
