Expunge Job Experience Clause… Minister Teambo Advocates For Youths By Thomas S. Kembay The Minister of Labour and Social Security has disclosed to journalists that the job advertisement clause, which requires five years work experience is going to be expunged in order to pave way for youth employment in the country. Minister of Labour, Mathew Teambo, stated that thousands of young university and tertiary graduates with diverse qualifications on yearly basis are left unemployed due to the inclusion by employers of this clause in job advertisements. “As a government,” the Minister said, “Our primary focus is to respond to the needs of the people, and as such we are currently putting modalities in place to engage companies on certain terms for employment.” The five years job experience, he said, should not be for youth graduates but those who have already been in the employment circle. “If the youths are not employed how they will get experience?” the minister queried. Mr. Teambo also disclosed that concession to investor companies will be a step in cutting down on the unemployment rate. He added that companies will be giving duty and tax free concessions for an agreed period of time with government checking on the amount of Sierra Leoneans they employ in return. The Labour Minister further commented that casual employment provides more benefit to the employer at the expense of the employee and the government in general. He continued that since casual labour lasts for three month, the labourer ends up revolving back to the state of unemployment after that period, without any entitlement or related benefit. As such, the Ministry of Labour, he assured, will review the casual labour law in a way that it will give choices to employers to either pay more money up front or settle for long term employment.
