Extracts of a mail from Maj Gen KM Bhimaya, extremely apt and topical in the Indian context, are reproduced below. The need of the times we live in, towards which the Citizenry- particularly the media, has a major contribution to make, is to sensitize both the politician and the bureaucrat to our legitimate demands: What we ask for now is what we fully deserve. Else, who in his senses would join a life of give all despite the establishments apathy; except as a no option. Which would not be good for our national security definitely. Quote During my recent visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library at Springfield, Illinois, I came across a priceless piece of tribute to the U.S. Army veterans by the Decatur Review (May 31, 1893). I am not sure whether some of the Indian Army veterans, much less the insensitive leadership and the bureaucrats, grasp the import of of this message: We do not need charity, but we do demand basic comforts in our old age for the service we rendered to the Nation. “Every soldier who placed himself on the deadly altar is as deserving of credit as if he had died there. The truest way to honor the dead is to rightly appreciate the living. The returned veteran who is healthy and beyond need and to whom the nation is largely indebted does not ask charity at the hands of the government he served, but it is not too much to ask that the pension laws shall be so perfected and so administered that none of our worthy comrades and their families shall be left to suffer for the comforts of life.” Unquote
