Eye care is very important aspect of neonatal care. When a baby is born he/she is given Antibiotic or silver nitrate drops to prevent ophthalmia neonatorum. 3 main causes of ophthalmia neonatorum .. CGC C - Chemical (immediate after birth) G- Gonococcal (1st week after birth) C- Chlamydial (1st week or after and may cause upto weeks) despite of prevention, if a child develops ophthalmia neonatorum, the treatment for gonococcal would be ceftriaxone and for chlamydial would be erythromycin both topical and systemic b/c chlamydial can also cause serious lung infections......***HERE COMES A TWIST**** STUDIES PROVE THAT USE OF ERYTHROMYCIN IN INFANTS IS ASSOCIATED WITH INFANTILE HYPERTROPHIC PYLORIC STENOSIS........ so before starting an infant with Erythromycin, this aspect has to be keep in mind now:))
