Ezra and I spent about five hours today at the commissary on - TopicsExpress

Ezra and I spent about five hours today at the commissary on lockdown. There was about a 45 minutes stretch at the beginning of confusion and fear where we had gotten word that there was an active shooter at the medical building (right by the commissary). We were herded into the warehouse and then a woman came and gathered all the women with children and escorted us up the stairs to a conference room, locked the door and stood guard outside of it. People posted themselves down the hall and at the top of the stairs, standing in the way of the threat and the kids. As we were walking up, they started to barricade the doors into the warehouse to block off access from the main store and to barricade the windows and loading doors with pallets. All I had heard was that there was a shooter, and people were panicking. I kept hearing people say with emphasis This is real world. Man, you learn something about yourself when you are really, really afraid in a situation you cant control. I just kept whispering Psalms 91 to Ezra and singing hymns to him. It was terrifying. Then the danger seemed to clear and we spent the afternoon getting to know some people. Some teenagers made a big ball out of pallet wrap and packing tape and before you knew it, people of all ages were playing some semblance of volleyball then a rousing game of Duck Duck Goose. When we were finally released and everyone went to finish their shopping, it was the friendliest grocery trip ever. Everyone was waving at each other, everyone was saying bye to Ezra and people were even hugging. I came home to a husband that hugged me extra tight. Interesting afternoon for faith and the human spirit.
