FACE ME (PT. 4 contd) A story by Jackie Cameron A tall, beautiful young woman strolled towards her stylishly dressed in a silk jump suit, a pair of steep pumps and a designer tote bag on her wrist. Her long blonde extensions bounced on her shoulder as she came towards Jada with Ladonna and the porter in tow. Jada was dumbstruck. She could not believe her eyes. Her best friend halted in front of her with a broad grin but her eyes could not conceal her concern. She reached out and hugged her warmly. Jada. Oh girl! She squeaked in her signature shrill voice. She drew back and studied her. Jadas wrinkled hands flew to her face. Ladonna and the porter watched from behind. The visitor tried to remove Jadas hands from her face. Jada stop. Please. She coaxed. Jada slowly removed them and her tears were evident. Your bags packed already? Ladonna asked impatiently as both girls stared at each other. Jada nodded. Ladonna busied herself with the bags while the porter waited. Oh Jada..... The young lady started but she cut her off, Dont. Jada then cleaned her throat and asked, so when yuh come down? I came in last night. I wanted to surprise you but it dont seem as if yuh happy to see me! Her friend responded. Jada was more humiliated than happy. This was her best friend since high school who was now living in Europe and whom she hadnt seen in two years. Any other time and under different circumstances she would have been elated but not now. She had not wanted her to see her like this. Uhm, yuh ready, Miss? The porter asked a bit awkwardly. Yes. Jada decided as she did not know what else to say to her friend. The porter pushed the wheelchair up to where she was standing and helped her to sit in it. She winced a bit as she still felt sore. Just as the porter was about to wheel her away her friend held on to the handles and asked, May I? The porter shrugged and released it to her then walked off towards the elevators. Jada bade the patients goodbye then allowed herself to be wheeled away to an uncertain future. ************** Downstairs jadas friend helped her out of the wheelchair while Ladonna went to the administration department to sign some forms. Are you sure you can manage? Her friend asked. Yes Kimone. Jada mumbled. What happened to Kim? Her friend asked amused but Jada remained serious. Damn this place is hot. And the elevators are so shaky. Omg. Kim complained as she fanned herself with a rag. She studied Jada who appeared to be staring into space and ignoring the expressions of awe from the passersby. Where is the taxi? Jada spoke up suddenly, breaking the silence. What taxi girl! I borrowed my brothers jeep. Its parked over there. She pointed in the direction of the driveway. Lets go. Ladonna can meet us there. She then held on to Jadas hand to lead her outside. Dont. Jada said tightly. I can manage. Her friend dropped her hand slowly and asked, you sure? Yes! Jada snapped and proceeded to walk out gingerly with her head held high. It took every ounce of willpower for her to do so as all eyes were on her. Wheres Mommy? She asked her friend that was by her side. At her home with the twins. Kim answered and took out a pair of designer shades to shield her eyes from the sun. After putting them on she rummaged through her bag once more and came up with a pack of gum. Want one? She offered. Jada shook her head. Kim stopped in front of a silver Pajero jeep and opened the front passenger door so Jada could climb in. She attempted to assist but Jada waved her away. When she was inside she turned to Jada and said angrily, Whats up with you Jada! I came down just to see you! I wanted to come before but I had a few modelling gigs! I turned down two more just to surprise you and all I am getting from you is the ice queen attitude! Jada was taken aback by her friends outburst and she could feel her anger now boiling. Whats up with me? Whats up with me? Yuh dont see whats up? Are you looking at me? Do you see how people look at me! The freak! Kim stared straight ahead and said nothing. Jada used this opportunity to charge on. Oh its all about Miss Kimone Spence! To hell with everyone elses feelings! Oh all of my skin was burnt off but thats nothing compared to your problems! Kim swung around to face her, Seriously Jada! You are so unfair to say that! You dont know how this has affected me since it happened! I cried everyday girl. Every freaking day! She screamed. Jada let out a dry laugh. Affected YOU. She said sarcastically. Affected YOU! Well it not only affected ME, I have to live with it for the rest of my life Kimone! Kim! Ladonna was returning. Both girls grew silent. When she opened the door and slid in the back she was about to place the bags on the seat but paused and looked at both of them. Is what happen? She asked. Silence followed. Hello! She called. Kim started the engine. Jada folded her arms and gazed through the window. Ladonna sighed loudly. It was going to be a long ride home.
