FAMMs President, Julie Stewart, spoke out in support of sentencing reform and the need for more presidential commutations in a recent article by Think Progress: Families Against Mandatory Minimums President Julie Stewart referred to those granted commutations as the lucky few, in a federal system that still dictates low-level drug offenders spend years in prison under mandatory minimum statutes. Bipartisan sentencing reform bills were pending in both the House and the Senate this year. These are the kinds of people we spend 30 percent of the federal crime-fighting budget on each year, instead of funding better crime prevention programs or restoring victims, said Stewart, referring to the extraordinary volume of inmates in federal prison for nonviolent drug offenses.
