FANTASTIC NEWS!! I have just heard from Andrew Robertson, Managing Director and CEO of FishFrom, that they have received unanimous planning approval for a three-thousand-ton, closed containment salmon aquaculture production unit at Tayinloan on the Mull of Kintyre in Argyll. FishFrom is the first company in the UK to take forward the new technology of closed containment salmon farming. The team, led by Andrew Robertson, deserves credit for their courage in taking forward this project in difficult circumstances. AST has long supported new approaches to salmon farming. The scientific data show that the existing salmon farming industry, which grows Atlantic salmon in open cages in both fresh water and the sea, is causing serious damage to the environment and wild salmon and sea trout. The important thing about closed containment salmon farming is that: a) chemicals are reduced to a minimum, b) there are no parasites such as sea lice, c) the fish are fit and look like wild salmon (unlike the open cage industry product) from constantly swimming against a strong current d) Professional tastings rate CC farmed salmon as the best e) production can be sited close to markets thus reducing food miles to a minimum f) stress levels on the fish - and therefore wastage - are kept to a minimum because there is no requirement for wellboat treatments g) growth from smolt to market is eight months shorter than existing salmon farming methods d) Reliable supply is guaranteed because the water temperature is constant and risk of disease (such as ISA) is eliminated FishFrom is the UK pioneer of what may well become the new industry to challenge and ultimately replace the existing regime of farmed salmon production. AST salutes and congratulates the FishFrom team! Tony Andrews
