FASTING ON FRIDAY ALONE IF IT FALLS ON THE DAY OF ARAFAT This issue has been discussed by our Scholars and discussed in detailed in a book called FATAWA YASALUNAKA.Here is the summary 1. Most scholars aside from imam Malik are of the opinion that it is not allowed to fast on Friday alone except if one fasts a day before or a day after because it is prohibited in many hadith e.g Narrated Abu Aiyub from Juwairiya bint Al- Harith: The Prophet visited her (Juwairiya) on a Friday and she was fasting. He asked her, Did you fast yesterday? She said, No. He said, Do you intend to fast tomorrow? She said, No. He said, Then break your fast. Through another series of narrators, Abu Aiyub is reported to have said, He ordered her and she broke her fast.[bukhari] Hadith 3:205 Narrated Muhammad bin Abbas: Hadith 3:206 Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard the Prophet saying, None of you should fast on Friday unless he fasts a day before or after it. Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet said: Also, do not exclusively choose Friday as a day of fasting unless it occurs on a day that one regularly fasts.” [Muslim] 2.Base on the last hadith in sahih Muslim.Ibn Quddama,[in ALMUGNI]Imam Nawawi in [SHARH SAHIH MUSLIM] and IBN QAYYUM agree that one may fast in Friday alone if it falls on the day of one regular fasting in instances below a. A man who fasts one day off and one day on and that coincides with friday b. A man who pledges that he will fast if a sick person becomes healthy or if a traveller returns from journey and that happens on Friday c. One who is paying up missed Ramadhan fasting [avoiding this is better] d. ARAFAT IS ON FRIDAY.ETC Base on this we are all encouraged to fast on THIS COMING FRIDAY even if one will not fast on Thursday.eg-a woman who becomes clean Thursday night .THE reason for this is that it was reported from Abu Qutaadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about fasting on the Day of‘Arafaah. He said, “It expiates for the sins of the previous year and of the coming year.” Narrated by Muslim. May Allah accept it from us
