FATHER WALTER LINI SUPPORTING MAORI LAND RIGHTS STRUGGLE This previously-unpublished photo has been provided by Maori activist Mr Alec Hawke, who visited Vanuatu for the first time in April 2014. It shows the late Father Walter Hadye Lini with the protestors/occupiers at the land occupation at Bastion Point in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1976-1978. On the far right of the photo is Phil Goff who went on to become leader of the Labour Party in New Zealand and is still an MP today. They are inside the meeting house Te Arohanui (the great love) which was built at the Point and was torn down by the police when the protestors were evicted from Bastion Point. That bitterly fought struggle for that land was eventually won. It was one of the defining moments in the struggle of Maori to regain control of their land.
