FATHERS A nuestros padres… to our fathers… you resplendent souls, architect of the children we were and of the children who now are… You who stood in the gap and held up the walls. Who stand in the storm and hold up the sky. In a culture that devalues your role and resonance even as little girls beg for their fathers while growing into women, and little boys plead for their fathers while growing into men, we interrupt this false message of fatherhood to announce the truth of you who fulfill the promise of a child’s wholeness. You complete the child symphony. You paint the child sky. You are the deep voice calming in scary nights. The broad shoulders lifting daily loads up a mountain of youthful neediness. You are the enduring arms rowing a nubile boat across its tender early waters. You are the storyteller who cares to impart values otherwise lost in the mist. You are the sound heard when newborn hearts ask for a song of security. Your flocks of character and integrity descend into every moment where things are falling apart, and even though you have the power to wreak havoc, you reach into your soul and choose your precious minerals of tenderness, gentleness, sensitivity. You listen to her cry her broken heart. You put down your hammer when the moment calls for you to pick her a flower and remind her of her beauty. When he walks a little wounded warrior, you stow away your sermons and reach for silence and your strong hand on his shoulder. You are laughter to lighten the moment, candle to brighten the dusk, hope to illuminate the way. You bind your hydrogen with the oxygen that is mother and create an air inside of which children can breathe, and live, and dance, and be a lighter childhood. You, Father, Padre, Abba, Baba, Buwa, Tata… you mountain beside them. You brook for their drink. You legend told in Love’s language. You profound constellation that completes their night sky… and sunrise that assures their day. We bow down.
