FEATURE SCIENCE ARTICLE OMG! Veggie Chips The only permanent thing in this world is change. New generation, new foods. As our generation change the lifestyle, we also change, the clothes we wear, our daily routine and especially the food that we eat. The generation nowadays usually eats food full of preservatives and artificial flavourings which are junk foods especially chips. But now, we go back to square one, which is eating more vegetables and fruits and eating fewer preservatives. As another year passes by, people innovate many things such as technology and especially food. As population grows, it is inevitable to develop many ways to have food security. Thus, this results on giving birth to an innovation and also a technology of the indigent locale: Organic Veggie Chips. These chips are most likely found at trade fairs and municipalities that are promoting it. With the help of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the ex-overseas Filipino Workers (OFW’s) had their chance to show that Benguet vegetables could be turn into tasty snacks with less preservatives and more on vitamins. Vegetables are products of Benguet, this is yet another way to showcase it. Organizations were formed and each of them has there specialty and variety of veggie snacks and noodles. How do you make veggie chips? “We mixed flour and the vegetables then we cut it into thin strips. We fried it after. We just added a little amount of salt, garlic and some cheese. For this is just flour, awan raman na (tasteless).”, said Mrs. Arlene Sammat member of St. Pio Migrants Apostolate. It is simple and easy to do even teenagers and mothers out there can do it, to change the diet of their children to healthy and nutritious snacks. Hiland Harvest an organization, these products was produced by Bagong Bayani Family Association (composed of OFW’s) located at Ambiong, La Trinidad, Benguet. Their products include sugar beets chips, squash chips, malungay chips, carrot chips and celery chips. There is also a mushroom chicharon included on the menu. Veggie chips by the St. Pio Migrants Apostolate of Beckel, La Trinidad, Benguet also produces the same product but with a different presentation and packing. They offer onions with chilli flavoured chips, which is a unique combination that marks the difference of the two organizations. Products of both associations can be found at the Municipal of La Trinidad and at the Olac store behind the Baguio Cathedral. At municipal trade fairs both locale and to the neighbouring localities, these products are featured.
