FERRY WOULD BE A GREAT ADDITION TO THE MARITIME PARK! PNJ: We support the idea of ferry service from Pensacola to Fort Pickens and Quietwater Beach if it’s determined to be feasible and not a money drain. At first glance, the idea has plenty of merit: » Reliable transportation by water to two of our main tourist attractions will showcase the beauty of the area’s shoreline. Imagine a trip across the bay from Plaza de Luna or the foot of the Community Maritime Park site on a crisp fall day. The ferry would be guided by dolphins as the shoreline at Fort Pickens comes into view with landmarks at Pensacola Naval Air Station off to the west. Rather than driving, a quick trolley ride to the fort would be in order. » After a storm, if the Pensacola Bay Bridge is damaged, the ferry service could be a vital link to Pensacola Beach for people who need to return, if only to survey the damage to their property. With gasoline frequently in short supply after a strong storm, it could be a fuel saver for days. The ferry service could be funded by $4 million from BP as part of its promise to help the two-county area recover from the 2010 oil spill that crippled the local economy as tourists stayed way that summer.
