FFS! Do we really need to go over this AGAIN?!?!? With school starting up again, I keep seeing posts advocating for school-led prayer and the whole lets put God back in schools nonsense. No. Lets not. Lets uphold the Constitution instead. The reason schools and their agents (ie: teachers, coaches, administrators, lecturers, etc.) are not allowed to lead children in prayer is because it violates those childrens Constitutional rights. This does not mean a kid cant pray all on his/her own. It means that schools are not allowed to mandate s/he do so. It doesnt even prohibit a group of kids praying together. It DOES prohibit school staff from leading the prayer or requiring everyone to participate. Engel v. Vitale (Supreme Court decision June 25, 1962): Government-directed prayer in public schools violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, even if the prayer is denominationally neutral and students may remain silent or be excused from the classroom during its recitation.
