The legacy of Communist fear that McCarthyism had left, coupled with the intimation of apocalyptic doom, provided the fertile breeding ground for irreverent satire that hit uncomfortably and controversially close to home. DR. STRANGELOVE goes for absurdist comedy, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE for thrilling suspense, yet both capture and at the same time cheerfully exaggerate the obsessive paranoia and doomsday mood of the times, while innovatively combining documentary realism with stylized black and white cinematography, futuristic set design, and distorted lenses that add a touch of the grotesque. Find out what happens when an army general goes beserk and threatens to bomb Russia because Communism contaminates our precious bodily fluids, and when American soldiers return brainwashed from the Korean War to kill a presidential candidate in the service of a matriarchal conspiracy.
