FINAL COMPOST SALE OF THE SEASON TAKING PLACE THIS WEEKEND The final City of Saskatoon compost sale of the season will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on September 7 and 8 at the Highway 7 Compost Depot, located just off Highway 7 on the west side of the 11th Street junction. Finished compost as well as mulch (wood chips) will be available for sale. Compost and mulch will be sold by the bag; each bag is $5 for either 20 litres of compost or 35 litres of mulch. Residents can purchase a pre-filled compostable bag or bring their own similar sized container (e.g. 5 gallon pail). Staff will be available to fill containers, collect fees, and assist with loading. Residents may purchase up to 10 bags of compost and mulch each. Cash, credit card and debit will be accepted for payment. Compost and mulch are produced from the yard waste that residents, businesses, and the City drop off at the City Compost Depots or put in their curbside leaves and grass carts. About 600 bags of compost and mulch were purchased by city residents at the July and August compost sales. That’s over 13,500 litres of material! Using compost and mulch on your garden builds soil health and helps it retain moisture. Fall is a great time to add compost to your garden beds and lawn. Mulch can be used to reduce erosion and help soil maintain a more even temperature through periods of freezing and thawing. The City still has a limited number of $10 rebates available for the retail purchase of a back yard compost bin. Purchases must be made in 2013. To print a rebate form, visit saskatoon.ca and click on “C” for composting.
