FIRE IN MY EYES (©christian stone) Theres no sense in all this mischief, all you do is cause me pain. Said my lady from the back room as I looked out on the rain. You paint your low ideas and then you write your crooked words, While you sit beneath the moonlight watching all the evening birds. Oh no, I told my lady, I can see youve got it wrong, I only paint my thoughts, Ive done it this way all along, My words are never crooked, though at times theyre odd indeed, And the birds you see me watching, well I only watch them feed. Im not certain I believe you, said my lady in disgust, And then she pointed out what she just wrote me in the dust. You fool me with your words, she wrote, Your talk is no surprise, And then you always wonder why theres fire in my eyes. Im not so sure I know you, said my lady with a frown. You always act so distant, but Im sure youve been around, I can see youre highly read and I can tell youve been to school, And its plain for me to see that youre no ordinary fool. Well me, I stood there silent, then I tipped my hat in jest, I put a finger to my lips and then undid my vest. And then I raised an eyebrow, knowing soon Id feel her heat, And listened to her mumble as she sat down on her seat. Your words to me are nothing, said my lady as she sat, I can see it in your eyes and in the way you tip your hat, You talk to me in circles, but you hide your ugly sighs, And then you always wonder why theres fire in my eyes. My lady, Oh my lady, only good can follow bad, Remember all we said and think of all the things weve had. All the things weve had, she cried, And all the ties that bind, Are nothing more than echos on the backside of my mind. I listened to her wailing, then I hung my head to weep, And thought about the peace I had whenever I would sleep. My words are on my lips, I said, The thunder is my voice, I hate that I confuse you, but I guess I have no choice, I talk to you in rhythm, never once in foolish pride, And never have I thrown a single word to your blind side. She looked at me, then said, Well, youre stuck within your whys, And then you always wonder why theres fire in my eyes. Is there some way I can please you or is that beyond control? I asked my lady softly as the drums began to roll. I dance for you at midnight and I greet you at the door, I praise you for your beauty, but youre always wanting more. For sure you do that well, she said, For sure you do that fine, You even call me lover and you even pour my wine, But still you fool me greatly with the way you sit and stare, And you always make me wonder if Im more than you can bear. Ahhhhhhh, but youve been tricked, I told my lady with a smile, I only fool you sometimes, but even thats been quite awhile. She grinned and then she whispered, Your words are full of lies, And then you always wonder why theres fire in my eyes. Theres a path out in the shadows by a wall thats made of stone, Near the valley in the hollow where the sunset lives alone, You go there when Im sleeping, said my lady one fair night, When the stars are lost and weeping, when the moon is high and bright. On hearing what she said, I knew my secret was revealed, I had to think of something or my fate would soon be sealed. My lady, I exclaimed, You must be speaking of your dreams, You think Im in the shadows when Im really by the stream. Trickery, deceipt, those cold words should fit you well, Said my lady in her anger as the final curtain fell. You say I sleep and dream as our union slowly dies, And then you always wonder why theres fire in my eyes.
