FIVE CAUGHT WITH ELEPHANT TUSKS Police in Kasane are investigating a case in which five men were caught carrying elephant tusks. The Officer in charge of Narcotics, flora and fauna as well as diamond and mineral protection unit, Assistant Superintendent Ookeditse Moseki said that the five men have already appeared in court in relation to the matter. He explained that four of the men are Batswana while the fifth is a Zimbabwean, adding that they arrested the men during their operations over the festive season in a Corolla vehicle that was heading to Kasane from Chobe Enclave. He further said they are investigating an incident in which 14 elephants were found killed with their tusks removed at Linyanti Island, still in the Chobe district. This incident took place in the month of November 2014. In another elephant-related crime, Asst Supt Moseki noted that 34 elephant tusks were discovered in the Chobe National Park after law enforcement agents came face to face with the culprits. He explained that the culprits ran off when confronted, leaving behind the 34 tusks, pieces of clothing and food. Asst Supt Moseki noted that some of these cases involve foreigners and added guns or bullets are normally found at the crime scenes. There are cases of poaching for meat, which he said were also worrying. (BOPA)
