FIVE THINGS TO KNOW TODAY (7/22/2014) Your Post-Bulletin connection to late-breaking news, upcoming events and stories that will be talked about today: PANHANDLING VOTE An aggressive panhandling ordinance moved forward on Monday after the Rochester City Council voted 5-2 to approve the draft ordinance and give it a first reading, after a night of mixed emotions from residents related to the need for such a law. The ordinance, drafted by City Attorney Terry Adkins, would ban panhandlers from intimidating people by repeatedly soliciting, touching or following people. It would also set up zones within 15 feet of ATMs, restrooms and sidewalk cafes as areas where panhandling is prohibited, calling those “captive audience” settings. ALZHEIMER BIOMARKER A Mayo Clinic-led study unveiled last week has generated a lot of excitement about possible new treatments of Alzheimers disease. Mayo Clinic scientists have linked a new protein to Alzheimers disease, different from the amyloid and tau that make up the sticky brain plaques and tangles long known to be its hallmarks. HORMEL CONTRACT Austin has approved a contract with Hormel Foods Corp. to let it build a new Spam Museum on vacant land in downtown Austin. The Austin City Council on Monday unanimously approved the contract that says will help redevelop and enhance the downtown and return the land to private ownership. AFFORDABLE HOUSING An affordable housing project by Joseph Development in northwest Rochester advanced after the Rochester City Council unanimously approved three items despite concerns from some neighbors. The 49-unit Ashland Village, at 19th Street and Ashland Drive Northwest, received approval for a land use plan amendment, zoning change and general development plan at the city council’s Monday meeting. HEARD ON THE STREET The Kahler Hospitality Group, the Rochester company led by Javon Bea, is checking out the hotel market beyond downtown. The local buzz for weeks has been that the Kahler group, which owns four hotels in downtown Rochester, is taking the reins at the Ramada Hotel & Conference Center at 1517 16th St. S.W.
