FLASHBACK FRIDAY....... The year is 1970.....the setting is a wrestling mat in Francis Scott Key Intermediate School in Springfield Va. Officiating the combatants is William Fitzhans, wrestling coach and gym teacher. In one corner is yours truly, weighing in at approximately 105 lbs of pounding nerves, sweat and a bare minimum of testosterone (hadnt really kicked in yet). My opponent is one I have battled with often....and never gotten the upper hand.....its always close....but you must understand that my opponent is a triple jointed spider monkey named Bob McIlvaine. Bob is a fine technician with the gift of being able make you think youve almost got him pinned while the rest of him is slowly dis-jointing itself and wrapping around your other side. It just aint fair sometimes. As our match on this fateful day progresses, it is clear that both combatants have brought their A games. A highly technical match ensues. The scoring is low as the triple jointed spider monkey aka Bob McIlvaine uses calm and technique as he always does. While yours truly is much like a less technical bull in a china shop who just wants to pick you up and throw you down over and over again.....hey, sometimes it works. Were now in the last period and I have the lead at 3-2. But its starting to happen.....the dreaded spider monkeys joints are coming apart in ways that you think he should go to a hospital asap. Ive suddenly gone from a position of top control to an awkward situation where Im about to get reversed......this has happened before.....and I cant figure out how to stop it....so Im basically hanging on with all Ive got and the whistle blows. Ive finally beaten the triple jointed spider monkey. It was a short lived moment of glory. But in retrospect, it may have been the highlight of my wrestling career.
