FLIPS AND FLOPS LONDON GIRL CHAPTER 1 Dont mention the M word before you know a person. It puts the both persons under intense pressure. A relationship that could have turned out fine can end up being a disaster because the M is mentioned too early. That is what happened to me when I met Bola Akintayo. I met her online some 13 months ago. My name is Daniel Ibe, a political blogger. I work with a newspaper firm too I met Bola on Facebook. I first noticed that she commented on every of my post and so I took interest in who she was. Her views were usually controversial and interesting. So one of those days I clicked to see who she was. When I first saw her, she was plain ordinary, looked about 30 years old, but I must say there was this spark in her eyes that really caught my attention; something that said this is the girl that would be my wife. You see, I have had heartbreaks in time past....and so like many of you reading this, I have been looking, searching for a soul-mate. And I wouldnt mind if I saw her online, I clicked on her photos to check for other photos, but she had her setting such that only her friends could see them. I made moves to reach her on Facebook. And thank God she responded. Right now I work in Gibraltar as a medical scientist. But I live in London. I came here on contract for 6 months, she said to me. Gibraltar? Where is that? I was indeed a novice. I had never heard of such country before, Well, it is a British colony in between Morocco and Spain, she responded to my chat. Have you ever heard of the rock of Gibraltar? I liked this girl, and thus began our everyday Facebook chat. She had grown up in Ogun state and I in Lagos. We had both been in RCCG in the early 1990s, though in different parishes. We both knew friends in RCCG. This was possible because we were both youth leaders in RCCG back then. RCCG was not as massive as it is today, I was elated. Was this really the woman I was looking for? My missing rib? So I proposed to her online. Yes that may have been stupid, but considering the distance, and the intensity of our chats, I spontaneously did it. In one of those chats she had told me that there was no one.I wanted to ask her why. Now I wish I did. But then I felt it was none of my business, You are crazy, she said and added lol. You want to marry me? I am dead serious, Bola Akintayo, I said, something tells me that I have found my wife. That Daniel Okereke Ibe has found his missing rib.And if you would give me your number, I will call you She did. And I called her. Look David, if you are serious about marrying me, you will have to call my pastor. He lives in Ogun state,Nigeria. Whatever, he says is what I would do. She finally said, knowing that I wasnt kidding. Ok. Give me his number She did, and I called the man. Of course, he sounded disinterested. As a matter of fact, his tone hinted warning. I wish I had taken heed. Well, David, he said after we had conversed a while, make sure that you are convinced. I cannot determine who she marries. I wish you the best. That bothered me. He didnt sound as if he really wanted me to marry this girl. Bola was 30 going to 31. Shouldnt he be excited that someone was now interested in her? I called Bola and she gave some explanation and so we continued to chat everyday. Yes, almost every moment, throughout the day. Since my work puts me mostly online, I would create time to reach out to her. This continued for 3 months with a few occasional calls. Then she told me that she was returning back to London because her contract had expired. Dont you think I should come to Nigeria so that you can see my pastor, and some of my relatives in Ogun State. She told me in one of those chats. Later we can arrange for you to come to London so that you can see my parents. As you know, they now live in North London. Not a bad idea, I said. You could also come to Enugu and see my people She planned to come to Nigeria in January of the next year. This was December. I was elated, everything was going on fine. Though I still remembered how her pastor sounded. I told my friends in Enugu about her coming. I even told my dad and siblings. Are you sure she will come? Emeka , my colleague at work, asked. I laughed and said she would. I understood his doubt, Davo, online love no dey work, Emeka made sure he told me. January 14. I received a call from Bola. Sweetheart, your wife is coming on the 16th. Please come to the airport in Lagos to pick me Hmmm, she had called herself my wife and she was coming to Lagos. She wanted me to pick her from the airport. I called my friend who lived in Orile, Lagos and told him about my coming. He was game. I was excited. I would meet Bola Akintayo physically for the first time. My heart was racing, excited. So I was going to marry a London girl.
