FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES. This article hits the nail on the head. Instead of fighting with a rescue or others who think free adoptions are harmful, I would rather educate them. There are so many articles out there to read and get informed, but here is one that is short and to the point and hopefully makes the opponents of free or reduced fee adoptions, think. No, I am not delusional as one person put it to me today before she blocked me from her page; I just think she needs to be educated. In a nutshell, this article speaks to: 1. Angry animal advocates who insist free or reduced rate pet adoptions harm animals. Youre wrong. 2. Some talk about people who cant afford pets when theyre sick, etc. So what theyre saying is that if people cant afford to pay a fee then they cant afford vet care, food, etc., and they should not adopt because they will be bad pet owners. Research and data says Youre Wrong again. People who get their pet from a free adoption promotion value their pets just as much as those who paid a fee. [MY OWN QUESTION: These angry advocates, do any of you ever pick up a stray animal off the street, or someone has given you animal you didnt pay for? Did you value and love that animal or did you put it back in the street or give it back insisting on paying for it first, so you can claim the right to value the animal? Just asking.] 3. This article talks about the value of better marketing our dogs and cats for better results to get them out of the shelter as soon as possible. We surely need to do a better job. Today. Right now. Take our heads out of our butts and roll up our sleeves to do right by these innocent victims. I think you will like the article; at least it should make you think about how we could do so much more. Lets be honest. Studies show that a certain percentage of people are going to return an animal back to the shelter whether it was a free adoption, a $20 adoption or if they paid $145 for animal. What I am not OK with, is not trying to save as many healthy and treatable dogs as we can just because there are some who resent poor people for adopting an animal that they have judged cant afford. Thats really what it comes down to. From time to time, I think we all could use some help, me included. Im not judging anybody; you shouldnt either. I am sorry you feel the way you do. Rescue is about compassion and Im wearing mine on my sleeve. doggedblog/doggedblog/2012/09/what-opponents-of-free-pet-adoptions-dont-get.html Michael Ciccarello Erin Bentley Stephanie Harris Kris Hawkins Amy Johnston Voykin Kacey Lfvn Patti Lauria Cabrera Sue Climer Horn
