FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 15, 2014 SCHOOL LEADERS ENCOURAGE CHARTER ACCOUNTABILITY, CALL FOR GREATER CIVILITY AROUND EDUCATION POLICY LANSING, MI – State associations representing Michigans school superintendents and intermediate school administrators today released a statement in response to recent efforts to bring greater accountability to public school academies that serve Michigan students. At the same time, they decried recent media attacks that compare Michigan leaders to a separate activist: The comparison by the Great Lakes Education Project (GLEP) between State Superintendent for Public Instruction, Mike Flanagan and George Wallace was not only in poor taste but further seeks to divide the education community. There can be no room in civil discourse around education policy for such inflammatory personal attacks. The thoughtful work of the State Board of Education in response to The Free Press articles on public school academies should be incorporated into proactive public policy changes that would benefit the students of Michigan. These ideas, including accountability and transparency, should be debated based on their merit, rather than through inflammatory social media comparisons. We applaud Supt. Flanagans efforts to increase accountability for all school districts in the state. The students of Michigan deserve high quality education options. Superintendent Flanagan has worked tirelessly to ensure ALL kids have quality access to education no matter which school they attend.
