FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Vince Consiglio (248) 672-0957 June 5, 2013 Jim Rhoades (734) 578-6144 abateofmichigan.org/ MICHIGAN LICENSED MOTORCYCLISTS HAD ONE OF THE SAFEST RIDING SEASONS IN YEARS IN 2012. In 2012 there were 129 motorcycle fatalities in Michigan with a helmet choice law. 58% of those killed DIDN’T have a motorcycle license. The number of licensed motorcyclists killed in Michigan in 2012 was 54 according to reports from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP). The majority of Michigan motorcyclists killed in 2012 were wearing helmets. In 2008 there were 124 motorcycle fatalities in Michigan, with a mandatory helmet law. 38% of those killed DIDN’T have a motorcycle license. The number of licensed motorcyclists killed in 2008 was 77. All fatalities in 2008 were wearing helmets. “Losing a member of our motorcycle family is devastating. To know that a death could be prevented from education and proper licensing is unimaginable,” added Vince Consiglio, President, ABATE of Michigan. ABATE of Michigan urges legislators to pass HB 4781. This bill will tighten up the current Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) motorcycle program. ABATE of Michigan opposes Substitute for HB 4632 in its current form. This bill would raise motorcycle plate fees from a standard $23.00 to a fee based on the list value of the motorcycle. The motorcycle riding seasons vary in Michigan due to weather. Most riders ride 3 months per year. The proposed motorcycle plate fee could go as high as $185.00 per year. ABATE does support a reasonable plate fee increase that includes additional funds to be directed to the motorcycle safety fund. ABATE of Michigan opposes HB 4762, and HB 4763 which will allow local units of government to operate an automated traffic safety device enforcement program. ABATE opposes this bill on government intrusion issues. The unintended consequences of this type of legislation is not measurable, and the track record of these devices are questionable. It opens the door for further government surveillance and intrusion into society. ABATE of Michigan supports public and private rider education. A current list of motorcycle rider education classes can be found at the Michigan Secretary of State web site. ABATE of Michigan has partnered with public schools and private driving instructors to teach more than 80,000 new drivers about motorcycle awareness, using resources donated by ABATE members. ABATE of Michigan is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the overall rights and promoting the safe operating practices of all Michigan motorcyclists.
