FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE It goes without saying that substance abuse and addiction are serious problems in Canadian society, devastating families, and in many cases taking the lives of individuals afflicted. But, that is not the whole story. Recovery from this "completely hopeless state of mind and body” is also a reality. Many people overcome this health issue and go on to live positive productive lives. Therefore the Canadian Addiction Counselors Certification Federation (CACCF) wholeheartedly endorses the recent Mayoral Proclamations recognizing September 8, 2013 as "Recovery Day" in their respective cities. Many of our certified members are in personal recovery, have gone on to receive specific training in addictions, been certified and are doing yeoman service in our society. Their stories need to be told. As an organization Whose entire professional membership is dedicated to relieving the suffering of those afflicted with substance use/abuse issues, we are long-standing proponents of the message that "Prevention Works, Treatment is Effective, and Recovery is Possible”. Canadian Addiction Counselors Certification Federation We are hopeful that this initiative will continue to grow from the now 14 cities across Canada recognizing a single day, into a Recovery Awareness Month that carries the aforementioned message to the masses. The "Recovery Day” initiative is not an academic exercise but rather a human one. Congratulations and thank you to all who participate.
